Password or Passphrase?
Use a random password when a password manager or your browser will fill it in.
- Every character is unpredictable.
- It packs the most strength into the fewest characters.
- It is hard to type or remember.
Use a passphrase for the few passwords you must type from memory, such as a device login or your password manager.
- It is easier to read, type and remember.
- It needs more characters for the same strength.
- The word list is short, about 170 words. Use 8 or more words for anything important.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to generate passwords on a website?
Yes, here. Your own browser creates the password with its built-in secure random generator. It is never sent to a server, never logged and never stored, and it disappears when you close the tab.
Password or passphrase: which should I use?
Use a random password when a password manager or your browser will remember it for you. Use a passphrase for the few you must type from memory, such as a device login or your password manager itself.
How long should a password be?
Use at least 16 characters for any account you care about. The default here is 32. Each extra character, and each extra character type, makes the password harder to guess.
How many words should a passphrase have?
Use 6 words for low-risk accounts and 8 or more for anything important, such as your password manager. The words come from a short built-in list of about 170, so each word adds less strength than a random character does. Keep the number at the end switched on.
Which symbols can a password contain?
Seven: ! @ # $ - = _ . If a site rejects symbols, untick the symbol option and add a few more characters instead.
Can I use the same password on more than one site?
No. If one site is breached, attackers try that password everywhere else. Generate a new one for every account and let a password manager remember them.
Does this tool save my passwords?
No. Nothing is stored, so you cannot look a password up later. Copy it into your password manager before you leave the page.
